Crossing The Andes

Puerto Varas to Bariloche

Bariloche, Argentina lies directly east of Puerto Varas, Chile, on the eastern slope of the Andes. Crossing these mountains is a fine way to view the region's valleys and lakes.

From September to the end of April the journey can be arranged as a full-day or leisurely two-day experience (with overnight accommodations in the alpine village of Peulla). During the May to August winters the crossing is only operated as a two-day tour.

The full-day, group-basis land and lake crossing of the Andes begins with an 8:30AM drive from Puerto Varas along the shore of Lake Llanquihue to Vicente Perez Rosales National Park and Petrohue Falls.

At approximately 10:30AM, the first navigation begins. Cross scenic Lake Todos los Santos, enjoying views of the snowcapped Osorno, Puntiagudo and Tronador volcanoes.

Upon arrival in the village of Peulla just after noon, take time for lunch and hikes to the black sand beaches. Horseback riding tours are also available.

At approximately 2:00PM, board the tour bus for the drive over the Andes to Lake Frias. There, continue by boat to Puerto Alegre. At the port, another bus continues to Puerto Blest.

At 6:00PM, the final leg of the journey begins. This navigation of scenic lake Nahuel Huapi concludes at Puerto Pañuelo at approximately 8:30PM. The port is directly in front of the historic Llao Llao Hotel.

"As you sit on the hillside, or lie prone under the trees of the forest, or sprawl wet-legged by a mountain stream, the great door, that does not look like a door, opens."
